The question of the bench

In the city park just around the corner,
at the end of a twisted trail.
on a boardwalk by the beach,
the bench waits.

At night the gates locked,
All day as hikers pass,
After we've flown home,
the bench waits.

Whatever long meandering steps brought you,
Hesitant, purposeful or nonchalant,
Graceful, trudging or malevolent -
You arrive.
The bench has waited.

Have a sit.
Shake the pebble from your shoe,
See the mountain within reach.
Don't feed the squirrels or ducks.
Smell the sea.

A moment alone,
Lover in your arms,
Grandchild on your lap,
Puppy's eyes look up.

Enjoy this moment, this day.
Sun against your cheek.
Rain on your hood.
Sandwich, falafel or rice ball

Have a sit and think about your life.
What do you want?
What are you doing with your life?
The bench no longer waits. The wait is over.
What are you doing with your life?
